What "Design - Create - Elevate" Actually Means on the Carolina Coast

Every designer has a tagline. A set of words on a website that sounds good and means nothing.

Design - Create - Elevate is on my website. It's in my logo. It's on every proposal I send. And after almost 30 years of designing outdoor living environments on the Carolina coast — from Jacksonville, NC through Wilmington to North Myrtle Beach, SC — I can tell you exactly what those three words mean in the real world.

Not in a marketing deck. On an actual coastal property, with real soil conditions, real salt air, real families, and real budgets.

Design: The Master Plan Is Everything

Design — the way I practice it — is not a rendering. It is not a mood board. It is not a pretty picture of someone else's pool dropped onto a site plan.

Design is a complete master plan. Every element of the outdoor environment planned together, as one integrated system, before a single stake goes in the ground.

The pool placement accounts for prevailing wind direction — because wind affects both the pool surface and the comfort of everyone sitting beside it. The drainage system is designed before the hardscape is laid — because the slope of the hardscape determines where the water goes. The planting plan accounts for salt spray exposure — because the wrong plant in the wrong location on a barrier island property is a dead plant within two seasons.

On the Carolina coast, everything affects everything else. That's why the master plan has to hold all of it before the first trade partner steps on site.

When I hand a master plan to Smart Pools and JC's Hardscaping & Landscaping, every one of those decisions is already made. The pool builder and the landscape crew are working from the same document. There are no gaps to fill with guesswork. No conflicts to resolve in the field. No phone calls that start with "nobody told me that was going there."

That is what Design means in our studio.

Create: Execution Is Where Awards Are Won

A great design that is poorly executed is a disappointment. I've seen it happen on the Carolina coast more times than I'd like to count. It's one of the reasons I spent years building exclusive partnerships with the two best trade teams on this stretch of coastline.

Smart Pools — Brian Elliott and his team — builds every custom concrete pool in my designs. Brian is a licensed General Contractor and PHTA Certified Pool Builder with more than 25 years in concrete and pool construction. In 2025, Smart Pools won a PHTA International Awards of Excellence Bronze for specialty concrete pools — a national recognition earned on the quality of their concrete work alone.

When Brian's crew builds a shell, it is built to the exact specification in the master plan. The shape, the depth profile, the hydraulic layout, the equipment pad location, the automation rough-in. Exactly as designed. No improvising. No substitutions.

JC's Hardscaping & Landscaping — JC and his crew — installs every hardscape and landscape element in my designs. Every paver, every retaining wall, every drainage outlet, every planting bed, every irrigation head. They have been installing my designs long enough to know how I think — what tolerances matter, where the precision is non-negotiable, and how to handle the conditions that the Carolina coast throws at a project mid-build.

In 2025, the work we created together was recognized with 14 NALP Awards of Excellence nationally. Judges for those awards evaluate the finished project — not the rendering, not the proposal. The finished, built, real-world result.

That is what Create means in our studio.

Elevate: The Real Measure Is How It Changes Your Life

Elevate is the part that is hardest to put in a proposal — and easiest to see when a project is done.

It is the family that starts eating dinner outside every night because the outdoor kitchen, the lighting, and the ceiling fan on the pergola make it the best room in the house. It is the couple who bought a vacation home in North Myrtle Beach and now actually use it — because the pool automation lets them turn on the heat and the lights from the car on the way down. It is the homeowner in Wilmington who stopped apologizing for their backyard and started inviting people over. It is the Jacksonville family that added a cold plunge and sauna to their outdoor space and completely changed how they start and end every day.

It is the Brunswick County property that appraised significantly higher than the neighbor's identical floor plan — because the outdoor environment was complete, cohesive, and built to last.

Elevate is what happens when Design and Create come together on a property and produce something genuinely better than what was there before — not just aesthetically, but functionally, financially, and for the way a family actually lives.

That is what we build from Jacksonville, NC to North Myrtle Beach, SC.

Why It Matters Who Builds It

The three words only mean something if the entire team is committed to all three of them.

Design only works if the team building it respects the plan. Create only works if the trade partners are skilled enough to execute at the level the design demands. Elevate only happens if Design and Create were both done right.

That's why Smart Pools is our exclusive pool building and automation partner — every pool, every project. That's why JC's is our exclusive hardscape, land, drainage, planting, and irrigation partner — every project, every time. These aren't vendor relationships. They are the team. And the team is why the work wins national awards.

14 NALP Awards of Excellence in 2025. One design studio. One coast. One standard.
